“Prescription medication abuse is a very big problem in Santa Fe County.  Most of these abused drugs come from family and friends.  This is a great opportunity to safely remove these medications from the reach of potential abusers,” said Rachel O’Connor, Santa Fe County Community Services Department Director.

This collection operation is a joint effort of the Santa Fe County Community Services Department, Santa Fe County Sherriff, Santa Fe Police, Santa Fe Fire Department, the Pueblo of Pojoaque Tribal Police Department, and the US Drug Enforcement Administration.

Over the last several years more than 2000 pounds of discarded medication has been collected during these twice a year events.  The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) coordinates these dates nation-wide.  All drugs are collected and then safely destroyed by the DEA.
