Located in west central Santa Fe County, the La Cienega Fire District is responsible for providing fire and emergency medical services to the communities of La Cienega, La Cieneguilla, Rancho Viejo, Valle Vista, Santa Fe Community College, and approximately 15 miles of Interstate 25. The district’s two stations are located at 37 Rancho Viejo Boulevard and #18 Camino San Jose in the village of La Cienega. The stations collectively house two Class A engines, two pump & roll tankers, two brush trucks, two medical units, and a rescue with heavy extrication capabilities. The district responds to approximately 1100 fire and EMS calls each year protecting approximately 70 square miles of the county. This area includes a major interstate, many residential developments, and an ever-increasing commercial development area along State Highway 14. The district assists and receives aid from other agencies including NM State Forestry, US Forest Service, the City of Santa Fe, Sandoval County Fire Department, as well as other Santa Fe County Districts.
The La Cienega Volunteer Fire Department was formed approximately 35 years ago by local residents. These residents, also farmers, would burn their fields as part of the annual preparation for planting. Occasionally, fires became unmanageable and threatened the community. Residents worked together to fight the fires with whatever resources and personnel were available.
La Cienega Fire District started with a garage donated by a member to store a 4x4 brush truck on loan by the Forest Service. Years later, members constructed the current substation on donated land beside the community center in the village of La Cienega. Construction materials and labor were donated by the surrounding community. Original members were trained to basic firefighter levels. Despite the lack of medical/first aid available, the organized volunteers responded to approximately 10 calls a year to meet the needs of the community.
La Cienega is now served by career staff as a core, supplemented with district staff during assigned shifts, times of heavy call volume, and during serious incidents. District staffing provides training and qualification opportunities for individuals wanting to experience the fire service or for those looking to pursue a career and gain valuable knowledge as they enter the field.
