Assessor Mails Out 2008 Notices of Value
The Office of the Santa Fe County Assessor has mailed out the 2008 Notices of Value. Property owners should review their Notices to insure that their property values are correct given the laws of the state of New Mexico and professional appraisal standards. Property owners should also verify that their exemptions, name and address are properly noted on the Notice of Value. If property owners have not received a Notice of Value by May of 2008, they should inquire with the Office of the County Assessor as to why they did not receive the Notice. The goal is to ensure fairness for all taxpayers. To prevent the "many" from paying higher taxes on their property for the "few" delinquent property owners that are not on the tax rolls, state law requires property owners to report their property including new additions. It is not the duty of the Office of the County Assessor to look for and locate property - property discovered not to have been rendered by the property owner is subject to back taxes coupled with penalties and interests. To report property not on the tax rolls, property owners must send a letter with a proper location so that the Assessor's Office can investigate, appraise and add the property to the tax rolls, which will help reduce everyone's taxes. For more information, call 986.6300. Property owners have 30 days from the date the Notices of Value are mailed to inquire and perhaps protest the Notice of Value. After that date the Office of the County Assessor cannot change any valuation error. The property owner will then have to wait until the tax bills go out in November and file a request for refund thru the District Courts and pay the mandated court fees.
