Bennie J Chavez Senior/ Community Center Will Reopen on May 13

Santa Fe, NM - May 10, 2013 - Santa Fe County Senior Services would like to notify residents that the Bennie J. Chavez Center will reopen on Monday, May 13, 2013. All services will be provided at this time, including congregate meals, center activities, transportation and home delivered meal service.

The center will continue the previous activity schedule which includes:

Jewelry Making on Monday's at 12:30 p.m.

Sewing on Monday's at 1 p.m.

Weaving on Tuesday's at 12:30 p.m.

Origami on Tuesday's at 2 p.m.

Exercise on Tuesday's and Thursday's at 10:30 a.m.

Ceramics on Wednesday's at 1 p.m.

Bingo on Thursday's at 1 p.m.

“I’m proud Santa Fe County has worked so hard to improve this important community gathering place for residents of the Chimayo area. It is a valuable resource in the community and residents have anxiously anticipated its reopening,” said District 1 Santa Fe County Commissioner Daniel Mayfield.

The Bennie J. Chavez Center will have a grand reopening on Thursday, May 23 to include a barbeque and other festivities, a separate announcement will be sent out a later date with specific details.

The Center was closed in February 2013 for repairs due to a water leak. During the closure home delivered meals continued without interruption and transportation was available for seniors to participate in activates and congregate meals at the Abedon Lopez Center.

Over the past 10 years Santa Fe County has spent over $225,000 in renovations and upgrades to the Bennie J. Chavez Center including: parking lot renovation, bathroom remodel, retaining walls, new flooring, park improvements and a new kitchen. The new kitchen allows the center to serve Northern New Mexico seniors participating in congregate meals and from July 2012 through the closing in February 2013 over 3,500 congregate meals were served.
