Blockbuster Opening Weekend: DWI Program Exceeds Expectations

Santa Fe– June 19, 2007 – Santa Fe County’s Caddy program provided safe rides for at least 210 people this weekend. “That’s 210 less potential drunk drivers on our roads, 210 less chances of a tragedy” said Steve Shepherd, Director, Santa Fe County Health and Human Services Department “Our preliminary numbers from the weekend for the cab service were much, much higher than expected.”

The County DWI Programhas partnered with Capital City Cab in order to offer FREE chauffer and designated driver services within the Santa Fe City limits on Friday and Saturday nights from 5:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. for the summer. Reservations for free, safe transportation from any residence to any location or from any location to a residence for individuals and groups within the Santa Fe City limits must be made through the CADDyHotline at 995-9528. Reservations can be made any time (minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.) Riders will not be transported from one place of business to another.

Riders are being surveyed to ensure the legitimacy of the ride. Data collected will be measured against DWI stats compiled by local police agencies to gauge effectiveness. The County is increasing the dollars devoted to this trial, and may cut the trial short if this kind of response continues. A nominal fee would then be charged to help support the program.
