Board to Honor Local Environmental Advocate

The Santa Fe Board of County Commissioners will honor Edith Pierpoint tomorrow at 3:00 PM in the Commission Chambers.  Edith Pierpont was a resident of Santa Fe for 25 years and was a lobbyist for environmental protections.  Upon retirement, in 1983, Edith combined her interests in politics and the environment and developed a new career as a lobbyist for the League of Women Voters.  She became the State League's Natural Resource Chair, educating herself and others on land use, water, and waste issues, and was instrumental in the passage of the 1990 Solid Waste Act.

Edith was a founding board member of “The Great Old Broads for Wilderness.”  From 1987 to 1998, Edith was served on board of the New Mexico Environmental Law Center from 1987 to 1998 and was given the organization's 2000 Karl Souder Water Protection Award for her advocacy on behalf of New Mexico's water resources.

The Network for the Common Good chose her as one of the Santa Fe’s “Living Treasures” in 1991.  An avid hiker and bird-watcher, Edith also helped to establish a local branch of the Audubon Society.
