Changes to Property Tax Code May Impact Some Taxpayers
Santa Fe, NM – April 30, 2013 – Santa Fe County would like to notify residents of newly enacted legislation that may impact some taxpayers. Under the new law, Senate Bill 406, all property taxes (including current year), penalties, interest and fees due on divided or combined real property must be paid in full before a plat on a property can be divided or combined with other real property and before it can be filed in the County Clerk’s Office.
“The public needs to be aware that this new law may require taxpayers to pay the current year’s property taxes before the time they are typically due, if their real property is split or combined,” said County Treasurer Patrick Varela.
Santa Fe County Clerk, Geraldine Salazar would like taxpayers to know the process to initiate dividing or combining real property in Santa Fe County or a municipality located in Santa Fe County must begin in our Land Use Department or the appropriate department of their municipality, the County Assessor’s Office and the County Treasurer’s Office prior to recording a plat in the Clerk’s Office.
The Santa Fe County Clerk, Assessor, Treasurer and Land Use Offices are working together to make the required changes as easy as possible for taxpayers.
