Commissioner Hughes and Commissioner Greene to Introduce a Proclamation Declaring NM Electoral Excellence Day

Santa Fe, NM-Commissioner Hank Hughes (D-5) and Commissioner Justin Greene (D-1), being proud supporters of enhancing the electoral process, will introduce a proclamation recognizing the efforts of the Secretary of State and the Santa Fe County Clerk’s Office in enhancing the fairness, efficiency, and transparency of elections. These aspects are considered vital components of our democratic process and fostering trust among our constituents.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Elections Performance Index (EPI) ranks the electoral performance of states and counties across various indicators. In the 2022 EPI, New Mexico achieved the remarkable position of #1 with an EPI index score of 88%. This significant improvement underscores the state's commitment to electoral administration excellence and voter accessibility. Previously ranked at #25 in 2020, New Mexico's ascent to the top spot highlights its dedication to enhancing electoral processes.

The proposed proclamation acknowledges the diligent efforts of the Santa Fe County Clerk’s Office and the New Mexico Secretary of State in achieving this recognition on a national level.

County Clerk Katharine E. Clark commended the efforts her team and elections offices around New Mexico, stating, “Earning the top spot on this list highlights how hard the Secretary of State’s office and all 33 County Clerks and their teams in New Mexico have worked. Since I took office in 2021, Santa Fe County in particular has been focused on launching new initiatives to ensure everyone in our community can participate in the democratic process. Our top national ranking shows how committed we are to making sure every vote counts.”

Commissioner Greene affirmed, “The County Commission is responsible for review and oversight of the local election process and certification. As such, I have worked with the Santa Fe County Clerk’s Office to review preparation processes and witnessed Election Day canvassing. Clerk Clark and her team have done a great job at making it professional and efficient for our local elections to be accurate and accountable. I am happy to bring this Proclamation to the BCC for further recognition of her efforts and that of the Secretary of State.”

The Board of County Commissioners (BCC) will vote on the proclamation on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at their regular meeting.
