Commissioners to Introduce Resolution Calling for Common Sense Gun Laws

SANTA FE, NM - Santa Fe County Commissioners Hank Hughes (D-5) and Anna Hansen (D-2) will introduce a resolution at the Santa Fe County Board of County Commissioners meeting tomorrow urging the state and federal government to enact common sense gun safety measures.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that New Mexico's rate of firearm-related deaths across all ages, including children, placed the state fourth in the nation in 2019, the latest year for which a ranking is available. More recently, the New Mexico Department of Health reported that firearm-related deaths in the state increased 55% from 2010 to 2020.

"The heavy toll that gun violence has inflicted on our communities is unacceptable and unnecessary," said Commissioner Hank Hughes. "We are urging Congress or the State Legislature to enact common sense gun safety measures including closing all loop holes in the background check process and banning assault rifles."

"Gun violence in this country is out of control," said Commissioner Anna Hansen. "We are trying to encourage our state legislators to recognize the devastating impact is has on our communities and take the appropriate action."

Members of the public can attend BCC meetings in person at the historic County Courthouse, 102 Grant Avenue, Santa Fe, NM 87501. Attendees are required to comply with Santa Fe County policies concerning visitor screening and the wearing of cloth face coverings.
