County Considers Leaving Transit District, Partnering with City

The Santa Fe County Board of County Commissioners will consider withdrawing from the North Central Regional Transportation District at their next meeting.  The Regional Planning Authority (RPA) has recommended the County Commission and City Council consider creating a new Transit District comprised of the City of Santa Fe and Santa Fe County to better address local transportation and transit planning needs and services, including providing connecting bus service for the Railrunner.  The Santa Fe City/County Regional Planning Authority (RPA) is a recommending planning body comprised of four City Councilors and four County Commissioners whose primary mission is to develop a unified, regional future land use plan for the extraterritorial zone.

These actions and proposed actions come in response to a proposed 1/8% gross receipts tax by the North Central Regional Transit District.  The new tax is estimated to cost Santa Fe County taxpayers $4.6 million a year, $1.3 million of which would be diverted to subsidize Rio Arriba and Taos County bus service.
