DWI Program and Law Enforcement Working Together for Pilgrimage to Santuario De Chimayó

Santa Fe, NM – March 27, 2013- The Santa Fe County DWI Program and Santa Fe county law enforcement will assist the safety of Santuario De Chimayó pilgrims by conducting a multi-agency sobriety checkpoint on the route between Santa Fe and Chimayo on Thursday, March 28, 2013. The Santa Fe County DWI Program will be at this checkpoint handing out glow sticks to pilgrims in an effort to make them more visible to motorists.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, Santa Fe Police, Tesuque Tribal Police and NM State Police departments will be ensuring sobriety of drivers at the checkpoint, patrolling the pilgrimage route and warning drivers to be extra cautious as they drive between Santa Fe, Chimayo and Espanola.

Extra law enforcement officers will also be patrolling the route on Friday. Tesuque Tribal Police will have a command post set up Friday evening near exit 172 on north bound US 84/285 where they will be handing out refreshments and glow sticks.

The Santa Fe County DWI Program would like to offer the following suggestions to prevent drunk driving during the pilgrimage to Santuario De Chimayó and always:

  • Think before you drink, don’t get behind the wheel if you have been drinking
  • Have a designated driver who has not been drinkingTake a cab - the CADDy program is a $1 cab ride home from a bar or party Friday and Saturday nights in Santa Fe County
  • Don’t encourage others to drive drunk
  • Do admire the courage and responsibility of those who do take a cab
