Fire Safety Reminder: Upcoming Fourth of July Holiday

The Santa Fe County Fire Department would like to remind everyone that despite the recent rains, Santa Fe County is at a “Moderate” Fire Danger level which means fires can start from accidental causes and routine caution should be taken.

The following safety precautions should be taken when using fireworks:

  • Be sure to have a clearing in any area you plan on having fireworks. It is best to light fireworks on a non-vegetated, paved or concrete, flat surface.
  • Have a water source available like a water hose or bucket.
  • Throw used fireworks in a bucket of water to make sure they are completely out.
  • An adult should be present at all times.
  • Keep in mind what goes up must come down. Take note of where fireworks are going to land (i.e. in a neighbor’s field or on their home, a heavily vegetated area).

You are responsible for any damage to your neighbor’s home or property that is incurred as a result of your use of fireworks.

Fireworks such as bottle rockets less than 5/8 inch outside diameter and less than 3½ inches in length and firecrackers larger than 50 milligrams (by definition) are non-permissible per New Mexico State Statute 1978 Article 60-2C-7 Fireworks, Licensing and Safety.

“We ask that residents have a safe holiday weekend and be diligent in preventing a wildfire in their community,” says Santa Fe County Fire Chief Dave Sperling.
