Firework Safety
Santa Fe –July 3, 2010 – Effective June 29, 2010, Emergency Ordinance 2010-7 prohibits open burning in Santa Fe County. The Santa Fe County Fire Department encourages residents to use caution this holiday weekend and throughout the wild land fire season.
Fireworks such as bottle rockets less than 5/8 inch outside diameter and less than 3 ½ inches in length and firecrackers larger than 50 milligrams (by definition) are non-permissible per New Mexico State Statutes 1978 Article 60-2C-7 Fireworks, Licensing and Safety.
The following safety precautions should be taken when using fireworks:
· Be sure to have a clearing in any area you plan on having fireworks
· Light fireworks on a non-vegetated, paved or concrete, flat surface
· Have a water source available (water hose or bucket)
· Throw used fireworks in a bucket of water to make sure they are completely out
· Have an adult present at all times
· Remember what goes up must come down, so be aware of your surroundings, neighbor’s yard, surrounding vegetation, or a house
· You are responsible for any damage to your neighbor’s home or property
“We want Santa Fe County residents to have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend and ask that they be diligent in preventing a wildfire in their community by using caution with fireworks; parents should supervise all firework activity ”, said Santa Fe County Fire Chief, Stan Holden.
