Graffiti Crackdown

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TEEN TAGGERS, FREE PAINT, AND CAMERAS HIGHLIGHT COUNTY’S GRAFFITI CRACK DOWN

Santa Fe– August 15, 2007 – Santa Fe County has launched a multi-faceted program to deal with graffiti.  In coordination with Teen Court, “taggers” – those involved in graffiti – are cleaning-up graffiti around the County.  They will also be working with a local artist to put their artistic abilities to use in a constructive way – painting murals at County community centers.  “We’ve infused our graffiti efforts with new energy and resources” said Roman Abeyta, Santa Fe County Manager “Maintaining the aesthetic radiance of Santa Fe County is a top priority for us.”

A new paint voucher program has been set up to provide one gallon of paint to residents free of charge for cleaning-up graffiti.  A local company has donated paint for this program.  Although residents aren’t guaranteed a perfect color match, the paint is made available freely to, at least, provide residents a means of dealing with graffiti.

A new graffiti ordinance will soon be introduced to reinforce County efforts.  Also, cameras have been installed and are monitoring areas that have had graffiti problems.  Residents can call 986-6200, email miclokey@co.santa-fe.nm.us, or go to santafecounty.org for a paint voucher or more information.
