Grand Reopening of ReUse Area at the Eldorado Transfer Station
Santa Fe, NM – October 11, 2013 - The ReUse area at the Eldorado Transfer Station will be reopened on Tuesday, October 15 at 2 p.m. The purpose of the ReUse area is to have space designated specifically to saving still usable items from the landfill. The area is intended as a "last resort" space where usable or easily repairable items can be diverted from the landfill.
Typically, station patrons pressed for time (example: moving) bring items in good condition and leave them to be sent to the landfill. With the ReUse reopening, they will be instructed by staff to leave these items in the ReUse Area near the entrance, adjacent to the recycling dumpsters.
Items will be available for "adoption" by other station patrons on a first-come first-served basis. Items not adopted in a reasonable time will be offered to charities. If not suitable to a charity they will be sent to the landfill.
The ReUse area was originally built in 2003 at the Eldorado Transfer Station on Highway 285 in Santa Fe County. The ReUse Area was open for a few years, before closing. The Solid Waste Section of the County's Public Works Department, which runs the transfer station, has developed new operating procedures for the area and it is now ready for reopening.
County Commissioners Kathy Holian and Liz Stefanics, will speak at the reopening. Other speakers include representatives from the Public Works Department, the New Mexico Recycling Coalition, and Eldorado/285 Recycles.
The public is invited to attend, view and possibly adopt some of the items that will be offered.
Please note: Oct. 15 is a Tuesday, a day when the Eldorado Transfer Station is normally closed. It will only be open for the ReUse Area ceremony.
