Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center Opens September 14, 2012.

The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Center, conveniently located at the Buckman Road Recycling and Transfer Station (BuRRT), will open on Friday, September 14, 2012. All Santa Fe City and County residents will be able to properly dispose of their HHW starting at 1:00pm when the facility opens its doors for collection. The grand opening will take place earlier that morning at 10:00 am.

The 2,400-square foot facility will provide space for the handling and storage of HHW and will be open year round on Fridays and Saturdays from 8:00 am to 4:45 pm, except Holidays. Residents can bring in their HHW for a nominal fee of $50 per ton based on 20 pound increments (e.g., if you bring in 20lbs or less you will pay a $0.55). If trash is mixed in with the HHW, there will be a $6.30 minimum charge.

“The new HHW collection facility will provide a safe way for Santa Fe residents to properly dispose of their hazardous waste year round,” said the Agency’s Executive Director Randall Kippenbrock. “It will also offer long term benefits by providing a safer community and environment for all,” added Mr. Kippenbrock.

HHW is any unusable residential waste that is toxic, reactive, ignitable, or corrosive. The containers of these wastes generally have warning labels with details, and are found on products such as drain cleaners, motor oil, and pesticides. These wastes pose a potential threat to our community’s health and our environment.

Don’t forget, you can recycle your electronic waste at BuRRT too!
