Hundreds Take Santa Fe County Cab Ride Home on New Year’s Eve
Santa Fe, NM – January 7, 2014 - The Santa Fe County DWI Program Cab Ride Home (previously known as CADDy) was very popular and very busy New Year’s Eve, 269 people took 147 cab rides home. On an average night during July through December, 223 people took rides home from 124 cab rides. The Cab Ride Service was expanded to include New Year’s Eve.
The Cab Ride Home program is a service subsidized by the Santa Fe County DWI Program on Friday and Saturday nights. People can take the cab home from a bar or party where alcohol is served for much cheaper than what a DWI conviction will cost. The program switched the fee structure for 2014, it is now $5 a cab for 1 or 2 riders and $10 a cab for 3 or more. A reduced rate $1 Cab Ride Home will be offered during certain holidays such as Fiestas de Santa Fe, St Patrick’s Day and 4th of July in 2014.
The Cab Ride Home is a public service to keep drinkers from driving and to make it safer for people on our roads who do not drink and drive. According to crash and arrest data, Friday and Saturday nights are when more drunk drivers are on the road.
The Cab Ride Home program, along with a concerted public awareness campaign to remind people to not drink and drive, and enhanced and coordinated law enforcement activity are shown to be effective in lowering drunk driving crashes and fatalities.
