Judge Steve Herrera Judicial Courthouse Update, May 12

Santa Fe – May 12, 2010 – The County resumed construction activity on the Courthouse project. The initial phase of activity will focus on remediation of the site to prepare of construction of the building. The anticipated sequence of activities will include the following steps:

  • Excavation of petroleum contaminated soils
  • Installation of dewatering system
  • Backfill site with clean fill material
  • Begin construction of garage structure and building

Remediation activities are expected to continue though the end of summer. Vertical construction is scheduled to begin in early fall. County staff met with the District Attorney and staff as well as neighboring property owners to provide an update on the planned activities and projected schedule. The County and contractors are taking steps to ensure the project is conducted in a safe manner, focusing on the safety of the onsite workers and neighboring sites.

The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) has installed a temporary soil vapor extraction system to address the contamination outside of the Courthouse site. The temporary system started operation on May 10, 2010. A permanent system should be in place by mid-summer.
