Living with Fire in Northern New Mexico: Fire, Forests and Communities
A Free Public Workshop
When:Saturday, November 16, 2013 - 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where:Santa Fe Community College
Join us for this interactive workshop on November 16, 2013 in the Jemez Rooms of the Santa Fe Community College from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Local and regional scientists and land managers will deliver presentations followed by question and answer periods. County Commissioner Kathy Holian, will kick off the workshop and we’ll hear from experts including Tom Swetnam Director, Laboratory of Treeâ€Ring Research from the University of Arizona, Craig Allen Research Ecologist for the US Geological Survey among a prestigious list of many others. Breakout sessions will allow for open dialogue with participants and presenters. At the conclusion of the workshop, time will be allotted for one on one with speakers and sponsors. At this timely workshop, you’ll learn about the ecology of forests and fire in northern New Mexico; current conditions in our forests and Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) communities; and how land managers apply science to reduce fire risk and create more resilient forests. Community members and homeowners will gain valuable information on how to become more fireâ€adapted, and how forest restoration can protect watersheds and water supplies.
The workshop is sponsored and speakers are represented by the Southwest Jemez Mountains Restoration Collaborative (They include the Forest Guild, New Mexico Forest & Watershed Restoration Institute, The Nature Conservancy†New Mexico, & WildEarth Guardians), Bureau of Land Management, New Mexico State Forestry Division, Valles Caldera National Preserve, University of Arizona, Santa Fe County, Santa Fe Community College, Santa Fe National Forest, Southwest Fire Science Consortium, US Geologic Survey.
