Mayor Coss to Serve as Judge at County Teen
Santa Fe, NM. February 20, 2007 -- Mayor David Coss will be sitting judge for
Teen Court of Santa Fe County at the Santa Fe District Courthouse on
Wednesday, February 21st from 530 PM – 8:00 PM. “We’re excited to have
Mayor Coss” said Alice Sealey, Teen Court Director, “Having the Mayor on the
bench will be something these young people will never forget. For many of them,
it will be a defining moment in their lives.”
Teen Court is a first time offenders program for teenagers (12-17) with alternative
sentencing such as:
· Community Service
· Jury Duty
· Mandatory DWI Prevention Class
· Letters of Apology
· Substance Abuse Program
The Santa Fe County Teen Court Program started in 1994 to help young people
make better choices – to provide a constructive alternative to a justice system
that is overwhelmed. It served 557 teens and their families in 2006 with a
recidivism rate of about 4%. The main focus is substance use prevention
including:
· Assessment
· Drug Testing
· Counseling
· Group sessions
· Family Night – presentation to families on how substance abuse affects
brain development
· Reality Program – visit to the Youth Detention Center
