Operation Northern Safety - One citation every 80 seconds for 5 hours

What happens when law enforcement agencies in two counties work together to remind motorists to be safe? Officers and deputies issue almost one citation a minute to drivers who are speeding, talking on a cell phone, don’t have insurance and arrest those who are drunk.

Operation Northern Safety is a joint effort between Santa Fe and Rio Arriba county DWI Programs, Rio Arriba and Santa Fe County sheriff, Española and Santa Fe police, State Police, Pojoaque, Santa Clara and Ohkay Owingeh tribal police. Friday November 18th from 5 to 10 pm officers saturated 84/285 from Santa Fe through Espanola to Ojo Cliente and Abiquiu and NM 68 at Ohkay Owingeh. During a five hours period 40 officers covered 100 miles of road and highway issuing 387 citations. This represents an average of one citation every 80 seconds.

The special saturation patrol is intended to remind drivers to slow down, 185 speeding citations, and to drive sober, 3 DWI arrests. Most drivers buckled their seatbelts.

“During this holiday time we wish you all a happy and festive time. Drive carefully, drive sober, buckle up and for all of our sake, slow down, “said Lupe Sanchez, Santa Fe County DWI Program Coordinator.

There will be more operations like this throughout the holiday season so that we all can Arrive Alive.
