Preliminary Statistics Show 2012 Santa Fe County Alcohol Involved Fatalities Down

New Year’s Eve CADDy Ridership Up

Santa Fe, NM – January 7, 2013 - Preliminary information from the New Mexico Department of Transportation shows that seven people died in alcohol related crashes in Santa Fe County during 2012, almost half of the yearly average for the past three years. In 2011 there were nine people in Santa Fe County that lost their lives to alcohol involved crashes, 20 people in 2010 and 12 people in 2009. This is an average of between 13 and 14 fatalities due to alcohol over the past three years.

“Alcohol related deaths are tragic and senseless, if one person dies on our roadways because of alcohol and DWI, we still have work to do," said Lupe Sanchez, DWI Program Coordinator.

More than 160 people caught a CADDy cab ride home on New Year’s Eve. The CADDy program expanded its regular Friday and Saturday night schedule to include New Year’s Eve this year, which fell on a Monday. Typical ridership on Friday and Saturday nights is between 100 and 120 riders.

The CADDy program gives adults who have been drinking a safe and cheap ride home on the weekends. Drinkers should call 438-0000 between 5:30 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights for a $1 cab ride home from a bar or party where alcohol is served.
