Recycling Efforts Stregnthened With New Facility
Santa Fe– August 1, 2007 – Santa Fe's long awaited and much needed new recycling facility is now in operation. The Material Recovery Facility (MRF) has been retrofitted into the Transfer Station at 1686 Paseo de Vista, now known as the Buckman Road Recycling and Transfer Station (BuRRT) (pronounced Burt). The MRF is a state of the art processing plant which sorts, packages, and prepares recyclable materials for market.
The completion of the MRF in Santa Fe eliminates the middleman that was previously necessary for recycling in Santa Fe County. Before operation of the MRF began, BuRRT was hauling its recyclables to Albuquerque where they were baled and shipped to Denver for processing. This process was not only inefficient but polluted the air. With the MRF, materials will be sorted, baled, and shipped under one roof. The results are maximized economic benefit and environmental protection - the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
“We’re now equipped to better protect our environment” said Santa Fe County Commissioner, Paul Campos “Together, we can take a new direction and make a real difference.” With the opening of the MRF, BuRRT has become a full service solid waste facility handling everything from obsolete electronics and computers to dead pinon trees and clean branches to old newspaper and magazines.
The MRF itself is designed to process all of the materials collected by the County's drop-off recycling programs. These materials include #1 and #2 plastic bottles, steel and aluminum cans, old corrugated cardboard, old newspaper print, office paper, and junk mail. BuRRT continues to handle trash, along with a long list of recyclables including: e-scrap, green waste, tires, scrap metal and a wide array of papers and containers.
