Ribbon Cutting for Lower Trail Head at Arroyo Hondo Open Space

Santa Fe, NM – March 8, 2013 - The Santa Fe County Open Space and Trails Program is proud to announce the opening of the lower trail head at Arroyo Hondo Open Space. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Friday, March 15 at 2 p.m. at the trailhead, located on Arroyo Hondo Road, just west of I-25.

Directions: From Old Pecos Trail and Saint Michaels Drive head South on Old Pecos Trail. Turn left on Old Las Vegas Hwy. Continue down Old Las Vegas Highway through the light at El Gancho Way. Take your next right onto Arroyo Hondo Rd. Parking area is 200 yards down on your right. Parking is available on either side of Arroyo Hondo Rd past the entrance into the parking area. Due to the limited spaces for parking (8), we would greatly appreciate carpooling.

The Arroyo Hondo Open Space is an 86 acre property owned and maintained by Santa Fe County through the Open Space & Trails program. The parcel is located southeast of Santa Fe. The Arroyo Hondo, a seasonal stream, flows along the southern boundary of the parcel and Interstate 25 is the eastern boundary. The Hiking trails provide access to panoramic views of the Galisteo Basin, Cerrillos Hills, Ortiz Mountains, and the Arroyo Hondo. The Arroyo Hondo Pueblo site and the historic dam can be seen from vista points. The trail is open from dawn to dusk and is accessible from the north east boundary off East Old Agua Fria Road or from the lower trailhead, located on Arroyo Hondo Road, just west of 1-25. Hikers, equestrians, and bicyclists are welcome and encouraged to enjoy the approximately three mile trail loop. Dogs are also welcome, but please keep them on a leash and clean up after your pet.
