Safety Tips for Santuario De Chimayo Pilgrims
Santa Fe – March 31, 2010 –Santa Fe County and Santa Fe County Fire Department would like to remind Santuario De Chimayo pilgrims to take the appropriate safety precautions during their pilgrimage.
· Dress weather-appropriate and wear layers to adjust to the changing weather
· Wear bright-visible colors, avoid wearing black or other dark colors
· Carry a flashlight and wear something reflective, like reflective tape or a bright color that is visible from both the front and back
· Carry plenty of water to drink and food/snacks
· Stay on the path marked for pedestrians and follow signage, do not walk in the road
· Do not walk alone
· Notify someone where you will be
“Some of the most common things we see are people getting dehydrated, foot blisters, and twisted ankles or similar issue” said Assistant Chief Martin Vigil, Santa Fe County Emergency Manager, “If you are walking be sure to carry enough water and snacks, and wear appropriate walking shoes.”
Traffic patrol will increase Thursday night and continue though the weekend. A DWI checkpoint will take place during the weekend. Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department, State Police, Espanola Police Department, Rio Arriba Sherriff’s Office, Tesuque, Pojoaque, Nambe officers, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs will work together for the events along with Volunteer Fire Fighters from Santa Fe County and Rio Arriba County.
