Safety Tips From the Santuario de Chimayo Pilgrimage Joint Information Center

Santa Fe County and the Santa Fe County Fire Department would like to remind Santuario de Chimayo Pilgrims that while multiple local and state agencies are deployed along the route to protect their safety, participants should still take appropriate precautions to ensure a successful event.

• Dress weather appropriate and wear layers to adjust to changing weather conditions, and consider sunscreen and a hat
• Wear bright and visible colors – avoid black or dark colored clothing
• Carry a flashlight and wear something reflective, like reflective tape or glow sticks
• Carry plenty of water to drink and food/snacks
• Stay on the pathway marked for pedestrians and follow the signage. Avoid walking in the road if possible
• Do not walk alone
• Notify someone where you will be

And as always, the Fire Department reminds walkers to observe strict fire precautions.

“This has been a particularly dry winter resulting in high wildland fire danger along the route,” said Assistant Chief Martin Vigil, Santa Fe County Emergency Manager. “We ask that participants fully extinguish any smoking materials, and use the trash receptacles placed along the route to discard those items. And don’t hesitate to ask for assistance from the firefighters and law enforcement officers that are deployed throughout the route.”
