Santa Fe County and Pueblo of Pojoaque Work Together to Halt Sale of Fireworks

Earlier this month the Santa Fe Board of County Commissioners approved Resolution 2018-58, declaring extreme or severe drought conditions.  Under the resolution the sale and use of certain fireworks are prohibited in unincorporated areas.  The Pueblo of Pojoaque announced they will halt the sale of fireworks on pueblo land. 

“Through positive dialog with Santa Fe County Commissioner Henry Roybal and our mutual interest in uniting our community, we hope that this displays our commitment to the health, safety, welfare and wellbeing of the entire valley, county and state,” said Pueblo of Pojoaque Governor Joseph Talachy. He continued, “We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and wish you all a safe and happy 4th of July Holiday!”

“In years past, the Pueblo has allowed fireworks sales for the responsible enjoyment of our visitors, neighbors and community. This year, the Pueblo of Pojoaque has listened to the concerns of all residents regarding the sale of fireworks and given the current drought conditions, we have decided to ask the vendors to work with us to seize sales of fireworks for this 4th of July Holiday. This is the first time in many many years that the Pueblo has decided to do this,” said Governor Joseph Talachy.

“This action of Governor Talachy on behalf of the Pueblo of Pojoaque truly shows the Pueblo is dedicated to listening to our constituents and reducing the threat of wildand fires related to fireworks during this period of extreme drought,” said Henry Roybal, Commission District 1 (which includes Northern Santa Fe County).  He continued, “We could not be more thankful for their decision.”

“The Santa Fe County Fire Department appreciates the cooperation by the Pueblo of Pojoaque, actions taken to reduce accidental fires benefits all residents of Santa Fe County,” said Santa Fe County Fire Chief, David Sperling.  Chief Sperling added, “We encourage residents to enjoy a public firework display.”

Highlighted from the Resolution

1. The sale and use of missile-type rockets, helicopters, aerial spinners, sticktype
   rockets and ground audible devices are banned within all unincorporated
   portions of the County.
2. The use of permissible fireworks are limited to areas that
   are paved or barren or have a readily accessible source of water for use by the
   homeowner or general public.
