Santa Fe County Celebrates Geography Awareness Week with Community Adventures

Santa Fe, NM- November 15, 2011 – This year Wednesday, November 16 is GIS Day, a special day to celebrate Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Santa Fe County will celebrate Geography Awareness week, which is the week of November 14 with several "Adventures" for the community to participate in. The "Adventures" follow this year's nation theme of "The Adventure in Your Community".

The Santa Fe County GIS Office provides mapping and geographic analysis for all Santa Fe County departments, offices and constituents. Anytime you can ask where something is located, what it is near, or what the natural environment is like in Santa Fe County, you are asking a geographic question, and our GIS office can help with the answer.

We have created three "Adventures" for Santa Fe County residents to participate in Geographic Awareness Week, while enjoying the adventure in our community.

Adventure 1: Santa Fe County GIS has set up a webpage on the Santa Fe County website www.santafecountynm.gov/growth_management/gis/weekwith seven locations around Santa Fe County. We want you to guess where our mystery locations are! Each location has a reference number, a picture of the location taken from the ground, an aerial photograph (taken from an airplane) and clue to help you figure out what each location is. Once you are ready to guess where each location is, simply fill out the submittal form (Can be found at www.santafecountynm.gov/growth_management/gis/week) and email it to us or just email us your numbered answers.

Adventure 2:Stump the Santa Fe County Geographers! Email us photographs of your favorite place for an adventure. Your location must be visible from a public road and must be on public property. Your photos should be from the ground and from an online mapping program, if possible.

Adventure 3:Your Own Mapping Contest! Make a map of your neighborhood or your favorite location to have an adventure. Remember to include some common mapping elements such as a north arrow and a legend. The GIS office will vote for our favorite maps in each age category.

Regardless of what adventure you participate in, don't forget to include your name, age, and a way of contacting you so we can congratulate you on your success
