Santa Fe County Clerk’s Office Successfully Completes Española Public Schools Special Election

Española, NM- The Santa Fe County Clerk’s Office is pleased to announce the successful completion of the Española Public School District Special Election, which concluded on April 1, 2025.

The election asked voters to consider renewing the Public School Capital Improvements Tax, a property tax of $2.00 per $1,000 of net taxable property value allocated to the district. The proposed renewal would fund capital improvements for public school buildings, pre-kindergarten facilities, educational technology, and school grounds through 2030.

“I’m incredibly proud of our team for executing the Española School District Special Election without a hitch,” said Santa Fe County Clerk Katharine E. Clark. “Their professionalism, precision, and dedication to fair and accessible elections continue to set the standard across New Mexico.”

Ballots were due by 7 p.m. on April 1, 2025, and the County Canvassing Board is scheduled to meet on April 8 to certify the results. The Clerk’s Office facilitated the mailing, collection, and processing of ballots under state election law.

As of Election Day, the unofficial results for the Santa Fe County portion of the election are:

  • Total ballots sent: 3,117
  • Ballots received: 428 (For: 220, Against: 184)
  • Ballots rejected: 24

The Clerk’s Office is contacting voters with rejected ballots to begin the ballot curing process, per Election Code 1.6.10. Ballot curing allows voters to correct issues—such as missing signatures or identification—so their ballots can be counted. Voters are typically notified via mail, phone, or email and must respond within the legal timeframe to ensure their vote is included in the final count.
