Santa Fe County Commission Recommends County Commissioner Liz Stefanics for State Senate District 39 Vacancy
The Santa Fe Board of County Commissioners (BCC) held a special meeting today to make a recommendation to fill the vacant seat in State Senate District 39. The BCC unanimously voted (4-0) to recommend Santa Fe County Commissioner Liz Stefanics. Commissioner Liz Stefanics was also recommended for the appointment by the Bernalillo County Commission.
Stefanics, is currently serving her second term as a County Commissioner, representing District 5. Stefanics has previously held the Senate District 39 seat and has publicly stated she will run for the District 39 seat in 2016.
“When I was previously in the Senate, I covered four of the six counties. My management experience in several state agencies and nonprofits lends itself to participating in the legislative process, ” said Commissioner Liz Stefanics. She continued, “I want to help all the residents of District 39 and protect the use of taxpayer dollars.”
Stefanics has her Bachelor of Science from Eastern Kentucky University, Master of Science from the University of Wisconsin, a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, and post-doctoral work at the Ohio State University and the University of New Mexico in Law.
Santa Fe County had nine candidates submit a one-page application, a letter of interest explaining their interest and qualifications for the position, and a resume.
The vacancy in Senate District 39 was created when former State Senator Phil Griego resigned.
