Santa Fe County Fire Department Hires Youth Conservation Corps Crew

Santa Fe, NM – May 16, 2012 - The Santa Fe County Fire Department hired 10 individuals for the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) to serve a six month assignment with the fire department as a fuels crew. The team members are age 18-25 and will be trained in basic wildland firefighting, wildland powersaws, basic first aid and CPR.

The primary focus of the YCC will be working on public lands creating fuel breaks and doing generalized forest thinning projects. The team will also be available to assist with wildland fires that occur in Santa Fe County or around New Mexico.

YCC was created in 1992 to provide a process to employ the youth in public projects that provide the conservation and enhancement of the state’s natural resources and lasting community benefits. Participants learn employment skills, work ethics, as well as self-discipline and self-esteem.
