Santa Fe County Housing Authority Goes Smoke-Free

Santa Fe, NM - July 16, 2012 - The Santa Fe County Housing Authority Board approved a resolution on June 26, 2012, adopting a non-smoking policy for the residents living at the three County public housing sites: Camino Jacobo, Valle Vista and Santa Cruz. The new policy prohibits smoking inside all units and public spaces. Smoking will only be permitted in designated outdoor areas. The Santa Fe County Housing Authority worked with Santa Fe Tobacco Free Coalition on the new policy, which will take effect on July 1, 2013 for all residents and October 1, 2012 for new incoming residents.

“Santa Fe County received a notice from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) strongly encouraging implementation of smoke-free policies, we researched the nationwide trend and thought this was a positive policy change to implement,” said Ron Pacheco, Santa Fe County Housing Executive Director.

Santa Fe County joins public housing authorities nationwide that have adopted smoke-free policies.

Smoking cessation resources will be available to those residents who would like to stop smoking.
