Santa Fe County In Need Of Children’s Book Donations
Santa Fe, NM – July 27, 2012 – Santa Fe County is in need of donated new or gently used children’s books for the “Reading for Moms and Dads” program. The program helps inmates at the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Facility (SFCADF) keep in contact with their children through a voice recording. Volunteers help an inmate record themselves reading a children’s book of their choice for their children. Once the recording is complete Volunteer Services Coordinator, Chaplain Robert Ortiz then transfers the recording to a CD. The CD and book are then sent to the child using the Inmate Welfare Fund.
“This program benefits the inmate and child by providing an avenue for them to remain connected during incarceration, while encouraging the child to read,” said Arlene Manzanares, Program Manager at Santa Fe County Adult Detention Facility.
The Reading for Moms and Dads Program was originated by Daughter of Destiny Prison Outreach and has been in existence at the SFCADF for approximately 12 years.
Anyone interested in donating new or gently used children’s books or who would like more information can contact Arlene Manzanares at (505) 428-3210 or amanzanares@santafecountynm.gov.
