Santa Fe County to Launch Traffic Calming Pilot Project

Santa Fe, NM – October 10, 2012 – The Santa Fe County Public Works Department has been working with the residents of the Traditional Village of Agua Fria to address traffic safety issues within the Traditional Village limits. As part of these discussions, Santa Fe County will launch a Traffic Calming Pilot Project utilizing temporary rubber traffic calming devices. The temporary rubber devices will be placed on Agua Fria between Henry Lynch and Camino de Los Lopez. The devices will be installed on October 11, 2012 and will be in place for duration of 3 to 6 months.

These temporary rubber devices can be configured to create a variety of traffic calming solutions to include curb extensions, medians, bulb outs or choke downs for street narrowing. It is anticipated, that with the construction of these temporary traffic calming devices, cut through traffic and vehicle speeds will be reduced and neighborhood safety will improve. If this Pilot Project is successful, permanent structures will be constructed at strategic locations throughout this corridor.

During the placement of these traffic calming devices on Thursday, October 11, drivers should expect intermittent lane closures and allow additional time to negotiate this work area.

The Santa Fe County Public Works Department would like to encourage the bicycle community to provide feedback regarding the placement of these traffic calming devices.

To submit feedback or if you would like additional information about this pilot project, contact Johnny Baca, Santa Fe County Traffic Manager at (505) 992-3010 or jpbaca@santafecountynm.gov.
