Santa Fe County’s Pavement Preservation Program In Full Swing, $15 Million Saved in future Road Costs

Santa Fe, NM – October 8, 2014 – Santa Fe County has received multiple inquiries regarding pavement preservation projects in Santa Fe County. Santa Fe County’s Road Maintenance Department is currently undertaking a proactive approach to decreasing future roadway costs, with an aggressive Pavement Preservation Program. Pavement preservation treatments vary based on analysis of each road, but primarily consist of crack sealing, chip sealing, fog sealing and asphalt overlays.

A study funded by the Federal Highway Administration found that for every $1 spent on pavement preservation you save $10 on future road maintenance and construction costs. Based on the study, Santa Fe County’s Pavement Preservation Program in the last three years has saved over $15 million in future roadway costs by placing preservation treatments on over 60 miles of county maintained roads, more than 37 of those miles were done over this past summer (see road list below). The funding for these projects was a combination of Santa Fe County Road Maintenance Budget, State Grants, and Federal Grants.

The Road Maintenance Division is scheduled to place pavement preservation treatments on 53 miles of county maintained roads over the next 13 months.
