Santa Fe Rail Trail Update

Santa Fe Rail Trail Update

Santa Fe – April 15, 2010 – Santa Fe Rail Trail status update from Santa Fe County Open Space & Trails Program.

· Santa Fe County Open Space & Trails has received stimulus funding for the construction of the Rail Trail from the I-25 overpass to Rabbit Road. Staff has been working with New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) to prepare the bid package and award the trail construction to a contractor for spring 2010.

· Santa Fe County staff anticipates the approximate trail construction will begin in mid to late April and should be completed by mid May 2010. The contractor will be required to work outside of the Santa Fe Southern Railway train schedule and within the physical constraints of the site and the train tracks. Due to these time restrictions and safety considerations, the section of the Rail Trail under construction will be closed to all trail use until work is completed. This section is located near the I-25 overpass where the current asphalt paving stops and continues to Rabbit Road.

· Staff apologizes for the inconvenience and asks trail users to respect this trail closure request to insure the safety of themselves, other trail users, Santa Fe Southern Railway, and the construction crews. This trail closure will be temporary and anticipated to last 2 to 4 weeks.

· Trail construction will include the continuation of a 10-foot wide asphalt trail, fencing, and pedestrian access located next to the existing vehicle gate near Rabbit Road.
