Santuario de Chimayo Pilgrims Safety Tips

Santa Fe County and Santa Fe Fire Department would like to remind Santuario de Chimayo pilgrims to take appropriate safety precautions  during their pilgrimage.

  • Dress weather-appropriate and wear layers to adjust to the changing weather
  • Wear bright-visible colors, avoid black or other dark colors
  • Carry a flashlight and wear something reflective (reflective tape,a bright color, or carry a glowstick) that is visible from both the front and back
  • Carry plenty of water to drink and food/snacks
  • Stay on the path marked for pedestrians and follow signage, do not walk on the road
  • Do not walk alone
  • Notify someone where you will be
     

“The overnight temperatures compared to daytime temperatures vary greatly, be prepared for the range depending on when you walk,” said Assistant Fire Chief Martin Vigil, Santa Fe County Emergency Manager.  “If you are walking be sure to carry enough water and snacks and wear appropriate shoes.”
 

Traffic patrol will increase Thursday night and continue through the weekend.  The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department, State Police, Espanola Police Department, Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Office, Tesuque, Pojoaque, Nambe officers and the Bureau of Indian Affairs will work together for the events along with Volunteer Fire Fighters from Santa Fe County and Rio Arriba County.  Over twenty additional Public Safety Agencies are coming together to support this event.
