September 14, 2010 - BCC Meeting Summary


Santa Fe – September 16, 2010 - Below is a summary of the actions taken by the Santa Fe Board of County Commissioners:

Family Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children Proclamation passed by unanimous (5-0) vote: A national effort to promote parental engagement as a simple, effective way to reduce youth substance-abuse risk and raise healthier children. Family Day is meant to emphasize the importance of regular family activities as a way to facilitate parent-child communication and encourage Americans to make family dinners a regular feature of their lives.

Special Recognitions:

Santa Fe County Fire Department staff that participated in the July 9 technical rescue at Nambe Pueblo Falls were recognized for their efforts: Christian Mee, Nick Martinez, Martin Vigil, Jeremy Renda, Shane Todd, Marty Maley, Stephanie Maley, Marco Roybal, Marcos Archuleta, Grant Lundquist, Esteban Orneles, Saylor Alley, Walter Dasheno, Mike Fuelner, Garrett Allen, JD Damron, Donald Yardman, Charles Yardman, Andrew Ulibarri, Joseph Sandoval, Julian Sandoval, Jr., Ron Mayhill, Robert Gabaldon, Patrick Trujillo, Mick Montoya, Kevin Barrows, and Mark Herrera were recognized with a certification and standing ovation

Penny Ellis-Green was recognized for her outstanding hard work, decorum, and great example of a County employee as interim County Manager

Hispanic Heritage Month was recognized with a resolution (5-0) vote: The month will be a period when people recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week. Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the long and important presence of Hispanic Americans in North America.

The names of three County residents were forwarded to the Santa Fe City Council for their consideration to serve on the City of Santa Fe Library Board

Commissioner comments:
The Board of County Commissioners individually welcomed County Manager Katherine Miller.

Commissioner Anaya:
Invited the public to contribute to help raise money to send Santa Fe County Fair Queen Sara Zimmerman to state competition by attending a Frito Pie luncheon on Friday, September 17 from 11:30 to 2 p.m. at the Santa Fe County Administration Building, 102 Grant Ave

Commissioner Stefanics:
Requested that County Manager Miller provide monthly budget updates and noted that this Commission promotes transparency

Commissioner Holian:
Mentioned LightHawk and thanked John Olivas for his generous services: LightHawk volunteer pilots have provided educational flights to educate, protect and preserve our natural resources.

Commissioner Vigil:
Recognized Senator Bingaman’s congressional staffer Pablo Sedillo and thanked him for arranging the Senator’s site visit to the Buckman project which included an alternative energy facility.

Commissioner Montoya:
Mentioned that Northern New Mexico College is holding a “Take it Back” forum to address substance abuse. The forum will be held at the college on Tuesday, September 21 at 9 a.m.

Adoption of Santa Fe County’s Infrastructure and Capital Improvement Plan (ICIP) – a list of over 100 possible projects was approved. Staff was directed to work with a previous citizen survey and the Manager to develop a recommended list of the top five priority projects for approval at the next meeting for submission to the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration as a requirement of the ICIP.

County Manager Katherine Miller said she welcomed the challenge and opportunities presented in her position as County Manager and was prepared to work hard for the County.

The Commission met in executive session to discuss pending or threatened litigation, limited personnel items, and the purchase of water rights. Returning to open session, it was announced no action was taken and discussion was strictly limited to the mentioned items.

Public Hearings:

An ordinance amending and codifying the Land Develop Code was tabled.
