Smoke May Be Visible In Skies Above County This Week

The US Forest Service plans another prescribed burn in the Santa Fe watershed this week. It's set for tomorrow, depending on weather conditions. They plan to begin burning piles of dead trees that had been cut in a forest-thinning effort aimed at preventing a devasting wildfire. In all, some 1,500 acres of slash are targeted over a three to four day period. They say smoke will be visible and may settle into lower elevations during the evening. Since the project began in 2002, they've thinned and burned about 3,400 acres out of a total of 7,200 acres in the dense watershed.
