Sticker Shock Hits Liquor Outlets

Giving alcohol to a minor, anyone under the age of 21, is a felony.  Santa Fe County Student Wellness Action Team interns and students from Pojoaque high school will be putting big bright green stickers on cases of beer, bottles of wine and spirits reminding adults of this fact. Of all the places and ways underage drinkers can get alcohol, getting it from adults can be easily prevented and providing these big reminders at the point of purchase is a powerful way to get the message right into the hands of alcohol purchasers.

On Wednesday, November 18 and Friday, November 20,  local youth from Santa Fe High, Capital High, Academy for Technology and The Classics and Pojoaque High schools in cooperation with law enforcement will be going into businesses to stick these stickers reminding cashiers not to sell alcohol to minors. The law is clear: “It’s illegal to provide alcohol to a person under 21”.   The stickers used during this blitz will reinforce the message about the penalties for providing alcohol to minors.

Students from Pojoaque High School will be visiting businesses in Pojoaque with the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies.  Stickers will be put on alcohol packaging at Kokoman’s Fine Wine, Pojoaque Valley Super Market and two convenience stores.

It is an initiative that not only educates the community regarding underage drinking but also enhances leadership traits and advocacy skills within the youth participating in the program. Student Wellness Action Teams (SWAT) from the three Santa Fe high schools will be visiting two Airport Road businesses, Shell gas station and Walgreens,

Albertson’s on Zafarano Drive and the CVS pharmacy on Cerrillos Road have also agreed to participate. The youth will be accompanied by Santa Fe Police officers as they place the stickers.
