Town Hall Meetings Scheduled to Discuss Proposed Animal Control Ordinance

Santa Fe, NM - February 27, 2013 - Commissioner Kathy Holian in conjunction with the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office will host two Town Hall meetings to discuss dog issues and cat issues as related to the proposed Animal Control Ordinance. The first Town Hall meeting will involve items related to the dog portion of the proposed ordinance on March 6 at 6 p.m. at the Santa Fe County Fairgrounds, 3229 Rodeo Rd. The second Town Hall meeting will involve items related to the cat portion of the proposed ordinance on March 20 at 6 p.m. in the Commissioner Chambers, 102 Grant Ave.

The proposed of these meetings is to determine whether there can be a consensus of how to move forward on some of the more controversial issues (e.g., license fees, tethering dogs, feral cat colonies, etc.).

"The issues that involve dogs are for the most part different from those that are related to cats, so it seemed that it would be best to schedule two meetings. We want to make sure that we have the best possible ordinance and to get as much public input as possible," said Commissioner Kathy Holian.

Santa Fe County is working to move forward on the proposed Animal Control Ordinance that will replace the current Animal Control Ordinance. The Santa Fe Board of County Commissioners (BCC) held the first public hearing for the Animal Control Ordinance on January 29, 2013, a second public hearing was held at the February 26, 2013 BCC meeting.

Please Note: The draft of the Animal Control Ordinance has not been altered to reflect comments or concerns from the public. The draft will not be revised until all public comment is received. At that time a final revised version will be put forward for public review and approval by the Board of County Commissioners.
