Your Dog Needs To Be on a Leash, it is the Law

Your Dog Needs To Be on a Leash, it is the Law --- Santa Fe County would like to remind residents if you are using a county park, trail, or open space your domestic animal shall be restrained by a leash and under the control of a person, unless otherwise posted. Voice command or voice control is not the same as a leash. In addition to dogs, other domestic animals must be restrained.

“Over the weekend we had warmer weather and there were more people out on the trails and in the parks with their dogs. We have had several complaints that there are dogs off of their leashes, which have led to near attacks of other hikers or have created uncomfortable and hostel situations between trail users,” said Carol Branch, Volunteer Coordinator. She continued, “It is a complete misconception that if you are in the County your dog can be off the leash.”

If you are using a trail and come across an owner who does not have their animal on a leash, please contact 9-1-1 or call the non-emergency number at (505) 428-3710 to report the violation.
